We’re excited to introduce an upcoming mod for Gothic II: By Rune and Sword – an ambitious, story-driven project set in a previously unexplored region of the Gothic universe. The mod brings not only a brand new location in the form of the island of Milos and the town of Nadřičí, but also a completely different approach to classic gameplay mechanics.
You play as a named paladin, a survivor of a naval conflict with the orcs who washes ashore in unfamiliar lands. The local authority is crumbling, crime is rising, and a dark presence stirs in the mountains. No paladin has set foot on the island in a long time – and your arrival may determine its fate.
The mod focuses heavily on deep narrative, complex character relationships, and full consistency with the Gothic II lore. Forget the usual “zero to hero in two days” formula – here, your character’s growth is slow, realistic, and story-driven. Most of your LP (learning points) won't be spent on yourself, but on training the people of Nadřičí. Your role isn't just to grow stronger – but to lead, build, and protect.
Key features include:
6 chapters with a rich main storyline and meaningful side quests
Garrison command system – issue orders, manage NPCs, and defend the city
Pet system with evolution into alternate forms
Full rebalance – from weapons to enemy stats (for example, no more sleepy farmers killing snappers...)
New monsters, new magic, new models, new mechanics
Staying true to the Gothic universe is a core goal. The mod builds upon the foundation of Gothic II, respects canon, avoids logical inconsistencies, and adds symbolic but well-thought-out references to other projects (such as The Chronicles of Myrtana: Archolos).
“We’re not aiming to impress with flashy animations – but with a powerful story, atmosphere, and a living world that makes you feel like part of it.”
You can find more in the “Mods in Development” section – Gothic II: By Rune and Sword is currently the 20th tracked development project on the site. Since both the Facebook page and the initial announcement only launched last month, no additional screenshots have been shared yet – so the gallery is still quite bare. But don’t worry – I’ll keep you updated with all future developments right here.
On the mod page for By Rune and Sword here on the website, you’ll find the full translated announcement, along with links to the official Facebook page and Discord server.
