Gothic 2: Returning Legacy - Modification announcement

This news is about the rework of the original Returning modification, not New Balance. So this one's especially for people who preferred the old Returning over New Balance — even though, to be honest, I personally don’t know anyone like that :D. As you probably know, New Balance is miles ahead of Returning in every possible way. I had the text rephrased via AI to avoid copyright issues and all that bla bla bla, so now you can read the full article below.

Fans of the legendary Gothic 2 can look forward to something new once again. One of the most iconic fan-made mods — Returning (originally known as Návraty) — is getting a refreshed version under the name Returning Legacy. The project is being led by a Polish team headed by a developer known as Delph, with the aim of modernizing the original experience.

The updated version will focus mainly on fixing long-standing technical issues, improving optimization, and reworking several scripted events that previously had the potential to softlock players. A major addition is a fully retranslated version of the mod, replacing the often-criticized original translation. Moreover, previously separate areas like the Old Brotherhood Camp or Tower of Mist will now be integrated into one seamless world — without the old loading screens.

Players can also look forward to new gameplay systems. The game will feature redesigned smithing, alchemy, and pickpocketing, along with new spells and the addition of free aiming for bows and magic.

One of the biggest changes is the removal of Chapter VII, a controversial part of the original mod known for excessive backtracking and poor performance.

Another interesting feature is the planned integration of the Polish voiceover from New Balance into the Legacy version, which could significantly enhance immersion and atmosphere.

The release is currently scheduled for 2025, so Gothic fans definitely have something to look forward to. Returning Legacy aims to breathe new life into the classic mod, appealing both to longtime fans and new players alike.

F0rtuno's Note – Personally, I think this whole project is kinda unnecessary, but as always, I’ll keep you updated on everything :)
